Heart Shaped Strawberry Hand Pies

Ingredients

• Prepared pastry pie dough (enough to yield 2, 9-inch rounds)
• 1/2 cup Strawberry Pie Filling (or your favorite fruit pie filling)
• 1 teaspoon lemon zest
• 1 large egg (beaten)
• Coarse Turbinado sugar (for sprinkling)

Instructions

Step 1: Preheat and Prepare Baking Sheets

Place racks in the upper third and center of the oven and set the temperature to 400°F so the oven is ready when the pies are assembled. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone mats; have them waiting on the painted pine surface so you can transfer the finished hearts straight onto them without a pause.

Notes

• Chill the dough well to prevent shrinking during baking.
• Use a small scoop to avoid overfilling and leaking.
