A rolled sandwich
One of the easiest sandwiches to put together is a wrap—a sandwich made from ingredients that are rolled or “wrapped” inside a tortilla. The really great thing about wraps is that they’re flexible: you can mix-and-match ingredients that will go together, suit the tastes of the people you’re preparing them for, and take advantage of whatever happens to be fresh that day at the market.
Pick a tortilla
Start with a tortilla. Plain ones are fine, but you might want to experiment a little and use a flavored one. There are all sorts of types out there: the standard spinach or sundried tomato tortillas, of course, but also there are more exotic ones on the market. Why not try chipotle, jalapeño cheese, sriracha, even peanut butter? Each will bring your wrap into a new taste dimension.
Start with hummus
The ingredients you’ll use to stuff the tortilla is where personal taste, availability, and creativity come in. A standard place to begin is with hummus—but even then you’re not confined to what you see on your supermarket shelves. Why not add some pesto to your hummus to spice it up? You can buy (or create) basil pesto or sundried tomato pesto to go right into that hummus and make it sing. Just be sure that you choose flavors that are complementary to the flavored tortilla that you’re using as a wrap.
Make sure to add something like pepperoncini to really perk your sandwich up!
Put in some protein
After that, you can put almost anything that you want in your wrap sandwich, either by cleaning out whatever happens to be in your refrigerator or by visiting your local farmer’s market. Meats can include turkey, chicken, ham, roast beef, ham salad, tuna salad, and crab salad (the latter is especially nice with the spinach tortilla). Or why not slice up a hard-boiled egg?
Your other protein source in the super-delicious wrap is cheese. Here again you’re limited only by your imagination: Swiss, provolone, even something distinctive like cheddar or Monterey Jack can work. Or why not try one of the cheese spreads that are popular on crackers? That could be delicious in a wrap and has the additional asset of helping to hold the sandwich together.
And then finally come the veggies, and here, honestly, there isn’t anything that won’t work. Onions, peppers (green, red, yellow), tomatoes, and olives are all obvious choices. Add some fresh basil and chop up (using a nice sharp rocker knife) Romaine lettuce and a Japanese cucumber.
Perk your vegetables up by adding in some chopped nuts—pecans are perfect, but walnuts, almonds, cashews, and even peanuts are great additions. In fact, for something totally different and to add a touch of sweetness, try some dried fruits (raisins, cranberries, chopped apricots or even dates) or some chopped grapes or apples to add a nice touch.
As you see, you’re only limited by your creativity. Wraps can include just about any ingredients that you want, and since you make them individually, they can be tailored to both your own tastes and that of your guests. Enjoy!
